February 24, 2022, divided the lives of Ukrainians into before and after. On that dark winter morning, at 4 a.m., when Russian tanks crossed the state border and military aircraft entered Ukrainian airspace, no Ukrainian could imagine that they would have the strength to hold back the huge armada of Russian troops for four years and continue to hold them back because they were defending their own land.
Hollow promises to support Ukraine were heard from everywhere. Some guarantor countries froze in anticipation of the fall of Kyiv, while another aggressor country, which is also a signatory of the Budapest Memorandum, planned to march down Khreshchatyk, the main street of Kyiv. Ukraine needed weapons, but instead received concerns, anxiety, and a plan to evacuate President Zelenskyy.
Ukrainians did not expect Neptune missile would sink the Black Sea Fleet cruiser Moskva, they would succeed in liberating the Russian-occupied regional center of Kherson, successfully carry out the special operation “Pavutyna” to destroy Russian strategic bombers, inflict 1,000,000 casualties on the enemy's army, launch domestically produced Flamingo ballistic missiles at russia, and that Ukrainian drones would reach the “arteries of war” (russia's oil refineries), and revolutionize the drone industry.
Ukrainians could not imagine that russia had prepared for them the terror in Bucha, the destruction of Mariupol and hundreds of destroyed towns and villages by the bombing, the abduction of children, the rape and murder of civilians, targeted missile strikes on kindergartens, maternity hospitals, churches, strikes on the Chernobyl nuclear power plant sarcophagus, destruction of hydraulic structures, challenges with the electricity cuts of (because of destruction of the power system in Ukraine when the weather is below zero). Russia has done and continues to do horrific things that are even challenging to imagine, while the world silently watches! International law is already thrown to the dustbin of history. And the world community seems to have gone numb and blind, burying its head in the sand. The leaders of partner countries confuse the victim and the aggressor, forcing the victim to make concessions: to reduce its own army, to give up its lands, which russian troops have been unable to capture since 2014.
Ukraine is fighting in complete murk, surprising both partners and enemies with its stubbornness and indomitability.
Ukraine is holding on because we know that the darkest night comes before dawn! May the Ukrainian dawn illuminate the whole world and prove that good always triumphs over evil.
We will stand/resist!
